Development is a classic rocksteady record that barely came out in 1972, Jamaica. One of the rarest of the genre, Development is impossible to find…and even when found impossible to find a good playing copy—the pressing was just flawed. Sutro Park Records is proud to present a newly remastered version of the record, available on vinyl for the first time since it originally came out (probably available for the first time anywhere outside a few record shops in Jamaica). Painstakingly remastered by the great Gary Hobish, over a two-year period of time (there are no tapes, so everything had to be sourced from the best vinyl masters), the resultant vinyl release is a revelation: a must for rocksteady fans, a must for Derrick Morgan fans…an instant classic of the genre. Derrick Morgan was and is (he is still touring) one of the legends of rocksteady music. Bringing the sound from Jamaica internationally, Derrick Morgan had the style, the sound, the songs, the music. Legend has it that his look was the inspiration for The Two-Tone man, a brand made famous by The Specials and other later-period ska mavericks whose sound was inspired by Derrick Morgan.

***PEG LEG HOWELL was a forgotten, impoverished blues artist when musicologist George Mitchell recorded him at age 75 in 1963. It is these recordings that make up The Legendary Peg Leg Howell record originally on Testament. But Peg Leg was actually part of the original wave of blues recording artists, recording for Columbia in 1926. His story is like many: when success proved illusive, he turned his back on music and settled for bootlegging and other types of work until rediscovered in the ‘60s. By then, he was old and fragile—qualities that translate beautifully on this quiet, haunting record that would be the bookend to a recording output that was tragically small but truly rich. ***Live at the Bootleggers captures a moment in time, and a place in history when community was created around the buying and drinking of illegal liquor…moonshine…white lightening. It was recorded live at a bootlegger’s homebase in Fayette County, Tennessee in 1971 at the behest of LATTIE MURRELL, whom BENGT OLSSON and BILL BARTH had tracked down to document. Besides Murrell, Barth and WILLIAM FLOYD DAVIS, the contributors to this record just happened to be spellin’ with the same bootlegger that evening; they are unknown voices, arising with glory from the soak of moonshine, and then fading back into obscurity.

First time ever on vinyl, the soundtrack to the 2018 film Leave No Trace by ex-Tindersticks Dickon Hinchliffe is a beautiful, somber soundscape that finds the composer matching the sparse, meditative story arc of the film with long, stringed pieces and spacey reverberations. Hinchliffe, who had formerly worked with the film’s director Debra Granik on her landmark film Winter’s Bone in 2010, continues an incredible partnership with a score that stands alone as an artistic achievement while supporting a story of a father and daughter attempting to live off the grid among trees and ferns. The dark green and brown colors that accent their habitat are painted by Hinchliffe through his music, with his compositions breathing from the bark and leaves and dew. Designed by veteran Barbara Bersche, the record comes in a full bleed redwood grove cover and forest green vinyl, further highlighting the rich sound, perfect for the warm grooves. Pressed on green vinyl. The mediations presented by Dickon Hinchliffe on the Leave No Trace soundtrack…fragile, hallucinatory…are a thing to behold.
