***The Four Eyes are a long-standing Sacramento "budget rock" band, recognized for their endurance in the local scene alongside bands like The Bananas, NAR and The Trouble Makers. Their recordings, particularly on Secret Center Records, are noted for a comically lo-fi sound, sometimes described as "listening with a pillow over your head.”The Four Eyes are fronted by diamond-in-the-rough-crooner Joel Goulet and backed by the fact-based and austere rhythm section of drummer Jay Baker and bass-machine player Dave Ninja. Although originating from the coastal college town of Santa Cruz, they are mantel barriers of what some call “the Sacramento sound.”Now for the real question: What is Earth 2025 you might ask? ***Knock Knock is a celebrated Sacramento indie-pop/rock band known for their infectious, sunny 1970s-AM-radio-inspired sound, often described as a mix of folky acoustic rhythms, sharp surf-rock guitars (think Pixies), and danceable beats. Active for over twenty years, the group became a staple of the local Sacramento scene, often releasing new material every few years between weddings, child births, and divorces. Knock Knock is lead by “cool youth pastor” turned NPR donor Allen Maxwell (Vocals / Bass). Compromising this man’s vision are the married guitar duo Mike Cinciripino (Lead Guitar) and Heather Conway (Vocals / Rhythm Guitar). Every band needs a at least one actual musician. Knock Knock does better than one and provides two: Christine Shelly (Drums) and Dylan Barnes (Keys). Knock Knock's music is often marked by upbeat melodies that contrast with deeper, sometimes existential themes in their lyrics, described as "apocalyptic musings" that deal with personal, emotional crises. ***The Frenchmen formed as a Talulah Gosh cover band in 2002 by Amy Paris, Leon Levy and Niki Ortiz in the cultural nexus that is Sacramento, California. Needing a drummer with real ‘star power’ they ‘discovered’ the man of many bands (and hair styles)–Charles Albright. They practiced, they wrote songs, they played barbeques, played live on local college radio and anywhere people tolerated their plethora of RAT pedals and out-of-pocket French puns (i.e., not many places.) Playing led to recording, recording led to a record. Their first official release was the 7” EP Powdered Blue released by then San Francisco indie label Shelflife Records in 2003. This EP and their incessant gigging (giggling?) got them noticed by Clairecords who offered to release a whole album, to which the Frenchmen emphatically said “Oui!” After several recording sessions (and one ruined party), their album was complete! Sorry We Ruined Your Party is 12 lo-fi indie pop songs that clock in at a brisk 26 minutes. The split female/male vocals sound like a mash-up of Heavenly (Hey Amelia!), and Beat Happening–inexplicably played at a Minor Threat tempo. This clash of seeming opposites (hard/fast/soft/chill) would be a theme for the Frenchmen that is mildly reminiscent of Henry’s Dress. They even let the drummer sing a song! Sorry We Ruined Your Party was recorded in 2004 in Northern California by Chris Woodhouse (Karate Party), Wyatt Cusick (Aislers Set, Track Star), Jeff Melendez and Doug Godsey and mastered by Patrick Haight. ***According to Oxford, a glob is “a lump of a semiliquid substance.” The word is a fusion of blob and gob, a “lump of slime.” According to Sacramento, a glob is one of one of six GLOBS, a spirited punk rock & roll band that references the cult pop of THE BANANAS and the theatric roots rock that is Bruce Springsteen. The Globs sprang from the mind of MIKE R. MIKE—also the mouth behind The Bananas. Mike wanted a “punk E Street Band,” so he went about drawing from Sacramento’s always incestuous music scene. First, he tapped CHARLES ALBRIGHT, man of many bands (RAD, Charles Albright Band, etc.), and CHRISTINE SHELLEY (KNOCK KNOCK, PIZZAS). Christine got her dad, NICK SHELLEY, to play piano and sax. The Globs grew to include CRAIG (RAD, SICK BURN) and JESSICA (DANGER, INC.). Three years in the making, The Weird and Wonderful World of The Globs is twelve tight songs of infectious rock & roll—a punk edge, pop sensibilities, and that swooning feeling that makes you want to singalong. They played their first show in 2009 and their second a year later in 2010. They are sorry about that. ***CHARLES ALBRIGHT has been a fixture in Sacramento's underground punk scene for over a decade. Chances are the only band of Charles' that you've heard is THE PIZZAS, but he has been in a ton of them. This cassette features his various singles released on labels like S.S. and Permanent. No bullshit psych punk that still lurks in the garage and has great over-blown guitar that sounds like young Charles has soaked up plenty Leigh Stephens and Greg Ginn, which he has.
