Cinematic, profound and absorbing—Pyrit is the solo project of Swiss German Thomas Kuratli. This first album is the musical expression of an original literary project: the story of a journey into the body—dissolving into the universe and transforming into an extraterrestrial machine. Recorded in a parking lot, it is full of ideas and vivid emotions while definitely pushing the limits of the one-man band. After moving from Zurich to Paris, Kuratli started to work on UFO. Originally drawn from his love of electronic, psychedelic and krautrock, Kuralti creates soundscapes of a deserted concrete-world, full of destruction and loneliness. Sometimes there is a glimpse of hope, sometimes there is not. The music is simultaneously loud and fragile, complex and simple, and always evolving. Navigating between electronic psych, gaunt blues and the soundtrack of a weightless film, he exposes himself by donning the costume of a disenchanted crooner in search of the ultimate slow.

The music of Genevieve Ludwig, Owen Wuerker, Chris Taylor, and Emma Baker embraces collectivity and experimentation, imbued with the tension and intimacy of close friendship. Writing is communal, and everyone sings. Big Hush songs are sharpened by the unpredictable acoustics of DIY show spaces and recorded later in a basement studio. Edits are made in the backseat of a Volvo with the windows down. The songs are mostly three-minute concentrations of moody, solid indie-pop songwriting, with melodic dueling vocals and harmonies that poke out above the hiss of tape and distorted guitars. The songs for Wholes and Who’s Smoking Your Spirit? were written and recorded in 2014 and 2015, exploring intersections between harmony-laden melancholy, off-kilter punk urgency, and the lush cacophony of shoegaze. They document the group’s cultivation of a complex and original aesthetic, one that cuts through dense textures, arrangements and harmonies with a searing, catchy clarity. Now available on vinyl and re-mastered specifically for that format, these two are combined onto one album that also includes a new bonus track.

This tale takes us to the heart of voodoo ceremonies among drifting reliefs, steeped by jungle and fire. Lots of fire, fire in all its forms, central theme of the album.  Originally a solo project, Henryspenncer operated a real change and turned into an actual band with this album.This new incarnation turned the proper Henryspenncer’s psyche-noise-doom-progressive mixture into a rawer version, maybe just more rock’n’roll.  Hypnosis Gumbo has been written and recorded by Valentin Féron and Julien Magot, now joined by Carl Boisson, Charlie Batalla (Illegal Process) & Thomas Kuratli (Pyrit) to make Henryspenncer’s fire grow bigger.

Pittsburgh tech-metal hactivists Creation Is Crucifixion emulate Lazarus with a double-LP collecting their last recordings along with an impressive live set. The “final” recording by the band’s last active lineup, the long-rumored nine-minute opus “Antenna Builder” brilliantly merges their heavy technical metal along with the noise passages for which they are reknowned. The lineup’s similarly oppressive Rerecorded Splits tracks, some of the highest-fidelity recordings from the band’s extensive output, fleshes out the first disc in this gatefold double-LP package. Accompanying the studio material is a live LP from a classic set recorded on the last Creation Is Crucifixion European tour, captured live in Geneva during May of the millennial year. These fifteen-year-old recordings showcase tracks from across the band’s catalog, with a higher clarity than some of their raw studio recordings. Specifically mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin, the Antenna Builder + Rerecorded Splits / Live in Geneva 2xLP comes housed in a stark black-and-white gatefold jacket with gold ink overlaid. Versatile visual artist (of key work for Destruction Unit, Chelsea Wolfe + Deafheaven) and multi-instrumentalist Reuben Sawyer along with vocalist Morgan Enos follow two well received LPs and a slew of EPs with further-reaching explorations of Hollow Sunshine's drone/darkwave/pop amalgam. "Burning" is the new EP from the increasingly prolific California duo, and while the previous Hollow Sunshine work explored the landscapes of 1990s atmospheric pop and sludge, "Burning" pushes deeper into both the past and the future. The four new songs feel ancient and coated in precious metals, as Sawyer and Enos tap into the muses of Florian Fricke, Alice Coltrane and Bill Fay to form their most mature and realized release yet. Fans of conemporary, heavy/pop-influenced outfits Jesu and Hum will also rejoice in the beautiful contrast of Sawyer's downtuned guitar mass with Enos' subdued, haunting vocal melodies as the duo deftly wade through songs of helplessness, departure and relief.

Two years in the making, Henryspenncer released "Saturn" in 2013 a dense album, torn between cosmos, desert and concrete.  Both narrative and abstract, gloomy and luminous, the psych/folk/drone heavy mix of Henryspenncer is more personal than ever here. "Saturn" is also Henryspenncer's first studio recorded album (Holy Mountain, London). Mastered by James Plotkin (Earth, Zombi, Barn Owl, Horseback, Nadja, Isis...) French guitarist Valentin Féron founded Henryspenncer in 2008 after being involved in films scores, electro industrial and hardcore bands.  His music is deeply marked by Northern Scotland and all other forms of wild and steep landscapes, as well as artists like Grails, Six Organs of Admittance, Swans, Pink Floyd and various heavy / noise / metal bands Since "The Shelter Days", his first self-released album in 2009, Henryspenncer's music has aimed to embody distant imaginary deserts in a confrontation of different music styles (psychedelic, folk, metal, ambient).  Since 2014, Henryspenncer stopped being a one man project and became a full band, opened to new territories and to a more decibels orientated music.

In 2005, amidst the frothing of the twelve teats of Baba Jaga, six gelatinous, ebony pearls--blacker than the darkest midnight and thick with seething necromancies--descended on the fertile Louisiana swamplands. Alas! Hurricane gusts blew one droplet to the east, where it was lost in a labyrinth of space and time. But the other four flew westward to the Capital City where four grew tall and strong, honing their fell might and channeling their minds across the winds of time and distance to find their erstwhile brothers. For two long years did their minds' eyes search the ether realms. In 2007, their okkult delvings reaped a bountiful yield, and the Fifth's emaciated Gollum-esque form was fetched from across the broad Bonnet Carré expanse. Painting a hypnotic swirl of lush vocals over down-tuned riffs and steady rhythms, Hollow Sunshine’s debut album brings together deep tuning with melodic undertones and a garage recording for a unique mix of warmly familiar elements. Their debut album, Demimonde, recorded over a five-year period across locations in New York and the members’ native Virginia, draws from material conceived during arduous tour schedules for Baroness, the accomplished hard rock band for which Blickle drummed. His dance, pop and melody-driven compositions juxtapose with Nuckols’s darker, groove-focused, and harmonic vocal explorations.  The musical collaboration between these ex-step-brothers began in the late 1990s while the two were still high school students in the small Appalachian town of Lexington, VA. After separate nomadic wanderings around the States during their early 20s, Nuckols and Blickle both wound up in Brooklyn, NY, in 2007.  Alpaca quietly and intermittently recorded material between Baroness’s tour activities, finally hunkering down in the winter of 2012-13 to expand their mutual visions and perfect mixes. Specifically designed to be played on shuffle and yield a completely unique experience each time, Aidan Baker’s audacious monsterpiece The Spectrum of Distraction takes a nod from Zappa’s technique of “xenochrony” and runs it though the digital age via the shuffle aspect of CD and MP3 players. 98 (!) tracks spanning two discs make for an incredibly varied landscape on each listen; with pieces ranging from just a few seconds to over seven minutes, there is no shortage of diversity. Hallucinatory dreamscapes weave into frantic noise into dubby passages into chilled-out jazz into psychedelic grooves into an oppressive industrial crunch into a hip hop bop into almighty sludge dirges and almost everything else the kitchen sink offers. Start to finish, through and through, nowhere else is it possible to experience anything quite like Baker’s truly enthralling The Spectrum of Distraction. Well-known as a core part of prolific heavyweights Nadja, Baker is backed here by an impressive array of notable drummers who’ve cut their teeth in the likes of Swans, The Jesus Lizard, Slowdive, Killing Joke, Godflesh, Jesu and many more. He began the project in 2009 by soliciting drum tracks and loops, ending up with roughly six hours of material from 18 different percussionists, then recorded guitar and bass to go along with them throughout the winter of 2010. Italy's Vanessa Van Basten reside among a rare breed of bands (loosely categorized as "post-rock") that truly create instead of simply copy. At times lush and layered, at others minimal and haunting, Closer to the Small/Dark/Door's breadth is the result of years in the underground. Although quite heavy, the album employs far more atmosphere and ambiance than its contemporaries. Acoustic / classical instrument tracks conjure visions of Mogwai conducted by Ennio Morricone, while programming-centric tracks imagine Swans personnel falling hard for a Mediterranean girl who listens to a lot of Godflesh and Jesu. Nothing fits snugly into place, though--Vanessa Van Basten pushes genre boundaries in more than one direction. Thankfully, these veterans know the importance of "too much" vs "not enough." Closer to the Small/Dark/Door is a truly unique 50 minutes of rock music.

The old expression "like a ton of bricks" doesn't even come close here. The weight of a mountain is what Dial's absolutely crushing five-song debut EP drops. This austere New Zealand outfit successfully channels the darkest corners of the AmRep catalog, the raw ferocity of classic hardcore, the off-time kilter of math-rock, and the concept that music can actually be dangerous. The airtight composure of Dial's debut recording is striking; it focuses more on space and dissonance than technical shreddery. Obscenely heavy guitars collide with bludgeoning percussion and vicious female vocals, making for a downright terrifying listening experience.

Every few years a collaboration stands above the myriad split releases that are haphazardly scrapped together. Primitive North is what two strong bands can create when their forces are joined together.  Reaching well beyond their debut album, And We Wept the Black Ocean Within, A Storm of Light enters uncharted territories. Fusing delicate melodies with oppressive dirge metal and dense atmospherics, the band has truly come into their own with these two phenomenal tracks. Contagious, hypnotic, and haunting--though no big surprise, considering A Storm of Light is helmed by frontman Josh Graham, who cut his teeth as the visual artist for Neurosis and is a founding member of both Red Sparowes and Battle of Mice.  The prolific Nadja, a true behemoth of stark, glacial-paced sludge, delivers another massive epic of blissful genius. The duo's single 20-plus-minute track consists of their patented molasses-thick wall of ultra-dense fuzz and surprisingly tuneful white noise. On Gods and Queens' debut, washes of reverb collide with echoes of shoegazer's catchier moments. There's mature inconsistency here--or, in other words: fast songs, slow songs, and one droning psychedelic blissfest.   To quote the band themselves, "Gods and Queens is a three-piece from Brooklyn/Philadelphia who tried in vain to blatantly steal riffs and song patterns from some of their favorite bands (Hoover, Lungfish, June of '44, Spaceman 3, and the like), but failed in every attempt. Instead, here are seven untitled songs that in no way resemble who or what they were intended to mimic. Broadrick, showcases "Clear Stream" and "Falling From Grace," two pieces towards the darker end of the spectrum he's created under the Jesu moniker. Battle of Mice contribute the two most sinister songs they've recorded, "The Bishop" and "Yellow & Black." Heavier than the material found on their A Day of Nights debut, yet more dynamic overall, these tracks from Battle of Mice--possibly the final to be recorded by the band--complement the Jesu material well.  While both bands utilize traditional "heavy music" instruments, they are also unified by keyboard usage, atmospherics, and other unique elements to vary it all.
