Trylika

Demo 1988 + Interview
Nuclear War Now

*** "I was recently introduced to this obscure Lithuanian “evil metal” band by Dan from The Corroseum, who knows my taste in music from our past collaborations on Tudor and similar projects. Musically, Trylika channels the raw spirit of early demo-era Root (complete with bizarre corpse paint), the rough energy of early Tudor and Drakar, yet leans toward a more upbeat heavy metal sound rather than pure evil thrash.Active only briefly in the late 1980s, Trylika managed to record just three songs before disbanding. Now, NWN is proud to reissue these rare tracks on a 12" EP—complete with a recorded interview with the band’s main member on Side B.Formed on February 13, 1988, in Kaunas, Trylika began rehearsing at the Freda Culture House. The founding lineup featured vocalist Artūras Gumbrevičius (Ačkosauras), guitarist Arijus Skorupskis (who later switched to bass), drummer Viktoras Andrejevas (Bambino)—later replaced by Vladimir Lavrentjevas—lead guitarist Vytautas Inokaitis (replaced by Anatolijus Rozumas), and bassist Marius Klusas. The band was part of the Kaunas Rock Club and quickly gained recognition, winning several 1988 competitions such as Electric Guitar, Žemaitijos Cup, Aukštaitijos Taurė, Papagala, and Hard Express. In 1989, Trylika even appeared on West German television (VFR TV), introducing their unique sound to a wider audience.Trylika cited Metallica, Coroner, Motörhead, Pink Floyd, Anthrax, Venom, and Judas Priest among their influences—an eclectic mix reflected in their distinct approach to the heavy metal underground. Though the band dissolved by the end of 1989, their energetic live performances and unusual fusion of styles left...

The Endchanter by Araphel

Araphel

The Endchanter
Nuclear War Now

***Spontaneous and genuine yet undeniably within the canon of extreme metal, Araphel wear no masks nor offer no mysticism. Full-length proof: The Endchanter, which follows last year's introductory Old Comet Transition EP. Across the record's seven-song / 39-minute runtime, one will hear the honest voice of a musician speaking about his experiences and point of view—in this case, prolific Italian musician Santo alongside a lineup made up of veteran musicians of the Italian underground scene—sharing a critique of society and the dullness of our lives and rules we are forced to live by. The music is rooted in black metal, with a clear METAL aesthetic, and has deep ties to the best of the underground and classic metal tradition, but it's the heartfelt synthesis of form and content where The Endchanter creates its own poignant landscape. To be sure, sonic signposts are aplenty on The Endchanter—from old-school Greek black metal to the culter likes of Poland's Xantotol and Colombia's Nebiros to the spirit of Bathory, Dissection, Immortal, and Desaster among others—but where Araphel excel is narrative songwriting, rooted in sincerity and personal truth rather than fantasy. To immerse oneself in the album's lyrics is as engrossing as the music itself. There are no devils, messiahs, or sacrificial horrors here—just reality, resulting in an experience brimming with tragedy and triumph. A raw-yet-poetic reflection on the END—not just of individual existence, but of an entire belief system—Araphel's debut album seeks authenticity in a fragmented era, offering a perspective that is clear-eyed, disenchanted,...

Worlds and Worlds by Oxiplegatz

Oxiplegatz

Worlds and Worlds
Nuclear War Now

***The passage of time can have a curious effect on our assessment of music. Some artists or albums that seemed so vital and important at their inception age poorly, appearing dull and derivative as the decades pass. On the other hand, there are many bands—often the most experimental and innovative—that were initially under-appreciated, overlooked, or dismissed, but whose value becomes apparent only many years later. Oxiplegatz, a solo project by Alf Svensson—best known for his guitar work in Grotesque and At The Gates on their classic early releases—falls into this latter category. As At The Gates’ popularity grew following the release of With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness in 1993, Svensson felt the band was moving in a different direction than he envisioned and parted ways. His disenchantment was not limited to his former band but to the scene as a whole, which, he felt, was becoming increasingly predictable and formulaic. Bored by the familiar tropes of Satanism and evil that permeated black metal, Svensson found inspiration in the science fiction books and films he avidly consumed. His first self-released Oxiplegatz album, Fairytales, from 1994, was largely culled from unused riffs he’d written for At The Gates. Although it was, as he put it, of “uneven quality,” it set the course, stylistically and thematically, for his second album, Worlds and Worlds, which followed two years later and more fully realized Svensson’s vision for the project. While bands like Voivod and Nocturnus were premised on science fiction themes, there were...

***Hailing from Austin, Texas, True Iron Will is the vision of the lone songwriter and multi-instrumentalist responsible for the project known as The Iron Blood Commander. Finding expression in riffs that are simultaneously melodious and muscular, that vision is one of valor and conquest, the fortification of one’s will against the encroaching forces of banality, degradation, and weakness. With Spirit of Steel, the band’s sophomore album, The Iron Blood Commander has sharpened his compositional approach, diversifying the expressive range of his songwriting and tightening the instrumentation. The effect is blunt, confrontational—a storming display of martial might. There is a purity of purpose in The Iron Blood Commander’s music. The focus is not on atmospheric conjuration and spiritual contemplation. Rather, it is a rejection of stasis, an explosion of kinetic fury exalting man’s martial impulses, the honor of warfare, and the profound existential revelations obtainable only through battle, where one inhabits the liminal space between victory and defeat, and feels most acutely the immediacy of life pregnant with the omnipresent threat of death.

***Few bands in the history of underground metal have had as profound an influence on the genre with as limited a discography as Pentagram of Chile. Not to be confused with the U.S. doom band of the same name, whose origin predated its South American death metal counterpart by just over a decade, the Chilean entity officially recorded a grand total of two demos and an EP during the two-plus years of its original existence. The context of the band's formation and short-lived existence in a geographically and politically isolated and repressed country lent increased improbability to its eventual attainment of cult-like status. Its scarce output and insularity notwithstanding, Pentagram has been deservedly cited as a major influence on more prolific outfits such as Napalm Death, Entombed, At the Gates, Dismember, and many more.

VI Sonus Veris Nigrae Malitaes by Abruptum

Abruptum

VI Sonus Veris Nigrae Malitaes
Nuclear War Now

***Though they bore little sonic resemblance to their peers at the time, the story of black metal cannot be told without reference to Abruptum. Founded in 1989 by Tony “IT” Särkkä, a pillar of the early Swedish scene who, in addition to Abruptum, also played in Opthamalia and Vondur, among other bands, Abruptum rode the crest of black metal’s second wave. With their debut album on Deathlike Silence Productions carrying the catalog number Anti-Mosh 04, Abruptum was one of the first bands—preceded only by Merciless and Mayhem—to appear on the label that would come to define black metal and export it outside of Scandinavia. Even back then, Särkkä’s credentials were unimpeachable. Before forming Abruptum, he had been in bands with his high school friend Dan Swanö, who later formed Edge of Sanity and opened Unisound Studio, and who credits Särkkä for guiding him into the more extreme corners of the underground scene. Abruptum had little in common with the furious riffs and blast beats that typically characterized the genre; Abruptum was more an entity, a presence, than a band. “The audial essence of pure black evil,” an expression, attributed to Euronymous, that adorns some of the band’s album covers, captures the intent of Abruptum. In many respects, the formlessness of their music conjures a darker atmosphere than more traditional black metal, which still bears remnants of the rock music from which it evolved. Abruptum, by contrast, was a ritualistic distillation of the genre’s core elements. Like a dissected cadaver, splayed...

Herakles / Melqart by Caixao

Caixao

Herakles / Melqart
Nuclear War Now

***Since 2017, Portuguese multi-instrumentalist JG has been releasing music under the name Caixão. Guided by JG’s laborious research of the peoples that once populated the region in and around the land presently known as Portugal, Caixão’s music is suffused with Mediterranean mysticism. JG’s reverence for his land and its psychogeographical character is one feature that sets Caixão apart, especially as the regional traits that once defined the various styles of black metal emerging from different parts of the world have eroded, leaving the scene—like the world, in general—largely devoid of the distinctive, localized qualities that once made it so compelling. With this new album, JG draws upon the mythological figure Melqart, the patron god of Tyre, one of the most prominent city-states in the Phoenician diaspora, described by Ernest Renan as “a city of ruins, built out of ruins.” As Phoenician culture spread throughout the Mediterranean, so, too, did Melqart’s legacy. While there are few extant artistic representations of Melqart, and many details have been lost to time, he is believed to be the antecedent to the Greek half-deity and hero Herakles (known to the Romans as Hercules), whose cult supplanted Melqart’s as the Greek empire ascended to global prominence. The nexus between these two figures served as the inspiration for Caixão’s sophomore album, Herakles / Melqart. In particular, Herakles’ 12 labors illustrate the manner in which Herakles’s persona subsumed attributes of Melqart as the reach of the Greek empire swept out across the Phoenician world. JG devotes a track...

***Bestial speed metal a thing? Well, it is now because these guys are doing it. When I got the CD as a promo in the mail I had no idea what to expect. Perhaps from the eastern inspired layout I had expected something like a War Vellum like release (brick wall noise bm fest) but what I heard was a very original take on bestial black metal and speed thrash mixture? It’s really difficult to put my finger on what this style is exactly because it’s very original and unlike anything that I’ve heard in a while. Speaking to the band members it’s clear that their tastes are also all over the place which helps to put this album into context. In today’s overcrowded scene where subgenre sound adherence and specific visual aesthetics are followed like religious tenets it’s refreshing to see a band create something that’s completely devoid of any guardrails.

Dare To Venture Down To Earth, Father! Perish Into Nothingness - Split
Nuclear War Now

***From the frigid climes of the far North comes one of the most compelling split records in recent years: Finland’s W.A.I.L. and MISANTROPICAL PAINFOREST have joined forces to release Dare To Venture Down To Earth, Father! Perish Into Nothingness on split 12” vinyl format. These entities have existed in the shadows for many years, and this record is the result of a mutual respect between the two projects. Misantropical Painforest, a solo project of KUTCHECK GOREALIS (also of LEGACIES UNCHAIN) began in 2003 and has released three full-lengths to date. Those familiar with the work can expect more epic death-and-doom-tinged black metal, with some similarities to Isengard but without true parallel. For those new to this music: prepare for something singularly unique in today’s underground scene, with competing harsh and sung vocals and triumphant riffs reminiscent of Varathron. Fellow countrymen W.A.I.L. (meaning Wisdom through Agony into Illumination and Lunacy) occupy the second half of the split, returning with their first release since Vol. II from 2018. Another spectral outfit with a tightly curated discography, the music of W.A.I.L. dwells in the mire of black/death metal, with a heavy emphasis on occult atmosphere as opposed to a bestial/war metal approach. Their three songs tread a labyrinthine path, with a heavy sense of doom accompanying all their varied movements. Musical comparisons could be made to early Samael and Finnish cult Hail, but much like Misantropical Painforest, they defy easy categorization. A standout release of 2024, this split LP is a mandatory affair...

***Aside from the involvement of Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance (“NHV”), the only reliable constant of Beherit’s history is a persistent rejection of stasis. NHV has always insisted upon forging a unique path, one that is unpredictable and militantly unorthodox. Although the band’s history extends back some 35 years, they have played live on very few occasions, most of which were in the early days, when NHV and his confederates were still teenagers, and all took place in Beherit’s native country of Finland. Nearly three decades have passed since the last time Beherit took the stage, but they accepted the invitation to perform their first show outside of Finland at the NWN!/Hospital Fest in Osaka, JP in April of 2024. A few months later, on August 31, 2024, Beherit appeared in Prague, CZ. Accompanying NHV at these shows were Beherit’s original drummer, Sodomatic Slaughter; bassist Abyss, Twisted Baptizer, who played on the Engram album; and guitarist and vocalist Black Moon Necromancer, whose work with Witchcraft represents a tangible manifestation of Beherit’s legacy. With a setlist predominantly taken from Drawing Down the Moon, as well as a few tracks from The Oath of Black Blood and Engram, the band’s current live show is designed to be experiential for the listener, a curated atmosphere that only Beherit can produce. As those present for these shows will attest, the performances were not reducible to a mere recitation of fan favorites. Exhumator

Аз нося смърт
Nuclear War Now

***EXHUMATOR comes from the mind of Bulgarian multi-instrumentalist The Piff (aka Ivaylo Jordanov). The project’s country of origin was hostile to metal music at the time, with the prevailing Iron Curtain political climate essentially banning western music from entering the Eastern Bloc. Metalheads of the era had to rely on dubbed tapes smuggled from the west, which were not in wide circulation. After trading a few Uriah Heap tapes for his first guitar, the Piff played in a number of bands in the nascent Sofia metal scene throughout the 80s. The Piff soon learned to play the drums as well, inspired by a negative experience he had working with a particularly unreliable drummer. This mastery of several instruments would prove crucial to his later work as Exhumator. An early lineup featuring the Piff and guitarist Malkiya (aka Dobrin Filipov) would choose the moniker DICTATOR in 1989. Their first performance was at a Bulgarian metal festival in February 1990. The group was well-received, being one of the first extreme metal groups from Bulgaria. Two demos were recorded (according to the Piff, the masters for these demos are lost). DICTATOR went through a large number of lineup changes (including about eight different guitarists) before the Piff parted ways with the group at the end of 1991. Exhumator. was born in the wake of this decision. The Piff handled the drums, guitars and vocals for Exhumator. and brought his former bandmate Malkiya to play bass. Discovered on an old cassette tape during the excavation of Oxblood material in anticipation of the recent compilation LPs, these previously unreleased tracks from 1993 feature the last recordings of the original Oxblood lineup. Recorded at The Templars’ Acre Studios—where Oxblood also recorded their legendary “Under the Boot” EP—these four songs showcase the band at its peak. By that time they were seasoned musicians, having played countless gigs and spent time in the studio, but they were also still young and brimming with the passion and aggression of youth. Not only is this a phenomenal document of what was arguably the apex of Oxblood’s arc, three of the four songs on this EP were never recorded or released in any other form at the time (although a re-recorded version of “Always Right” appeared on the 2009 “Thug Rock Music EP). The EP closes with a rousing version of the patriotic anthem “Our Colors.”

Nuclear War Now

***"Oxblood erupted with a blitz of releases between 1992 and 1994, swiftly positioning themselves among the vanguard of the American Oi! scene. On the strength of their self-titled 1992 demo recorded at Don Fury’s legendary studio, Oxblood approached Headache Records, which was, at the time, a rapidly growing imprint releasing some of the best punk and Oi! from bands in and around New York and New Jersey. Headache agreed to put out a 7” EP, but rather than use tracks from the demo, the band enlisted the services of their contemporaries and friends, The Templars, who had a home studio out on Long Island where Oxblood could record. They completed a handful of songs during the session, four of which would be included on the seminal Under the Boot EP, a record so urgent and insistent that it simultaneously introduced Oxblood to the scene at large and secured their legacy for decades to come. Entitled Under the Boot + More Violence, this new compilation LP also collects the band’s contribution to their 1994 split 7” with The Templars, a pair of comp tracks from 1993, and eight previously unreleased tracks from a 1992 recording session at an unknown studio, sourced from a recently unearthed tape reel that had been long forgotten. Nuclear War Now

***Ceremoniously ending a silence of approximately three years, Necrogosto returned with a vengeance in 2023 with the cassette and CD releases of its latest studio recording, "Sudakaos." With a title that appropriately evokes both its South American homeland and the chaotic nature of its artform, "Sudakaos" resumes where the previous "Ancestral Bestiality" EP (2020) and self-titled demo (2017) left off. More specifically, the eight new tracks included once again provide a current-day glimpse into the Brazilian scene of thirty-plus years ago, where legends like Sarcófago, Holocausto, Necrobutcher, and their evil kindred spirits ruled. Additionally, "Sudakaos" directly pays homage to its ancestral compatriots with Necrogosto's included rendition of "Black Church," of Insulter and Sextrash fame. The production of this release is noticeably crisper and boasts better definition of the instruments and vocals than previous recordings. This is not at all to say that the band has strayed from the savagery of its roots. Instead, the tracks on "Sudakaos" are more impactful and reflect an enhanced and more memorable resemblance to the studio recordings of the greats of the Brazilian scene. In presenting this recording on vinyl for the first time, NWN! has fortunately opted to include the band's self-titled demo tracks in all their original glory, thus providing the existing bookends to Necrogosto's ongoing reign of chaos.

Into the Old Forest by Old Forest

Old Forest

Into the Old Forest
Nuclear War Now

***OLD FOREST formed in London, England in 1998. Comprised of guitarist / bassist Beleth and vocalist / keyboardist Kobold, the duo set out to make cold, archaic black metal in the tradition of early Emperor, Darkthrone and other like-minded Norwegian arsonists. Their 1998 demo "Of Mists and Graves” displayed a strong vision of what was to come, with a raw production befitting the gravelike atmosphere of the music. The group would follow up the next year with their first full-length “Into the Old Forest.” A record of pure, undiluted black metal, the LP shows Old Forest realizing their full potential. A grim miasma hangs over its eight tracks, with lurching and forlorn melodicism coupled with vicious blasting and violent riffs. Kobold’s ornate keyboard work adds a layer of gothic horror to the whole affair, its sinister aura placing this alongside the high points of 90s black metal. Old Forest would not release another record for nearly a decade, but this document places them in the pantheon of classic second-wave black metal. Nuclear War Now! Productions is proud to bring this record back into circulation.

Vengeance From Darkness by Death Yell

Death Yell

Vengeance From Darkness
Nuclear War Now

***BACK IN PRINT ON NEW WHITE VINYL!!! In the 1980s, South America produced some of the most legendary extreme metal in the genre’s history. While the renowned Brazilian scene undoubtedly cast a long shadow, like minded maniacs in regions like Colombia and Chile were simultaneously creating their own brand of black/death metal. Among the pioneers of the Chilean scene, DEATH YELL stands out as a founding group, and NWN! Productions is proud to present an official reissue of their legendary 1989 demo Vengeance From Darkness. Formed in 1988 in Santiago (after a stint under the name Pestilence), Death Yell played thrashing death metal with a manic intensity with clear influences from Brazilian maniacs such as Sarcofago, Sextrash and Mutilator, with a punk energy that brings to mind Extreme Noise Terro and the UK grind scene. Instrumentally proficient and sonically violent, Death Yell creates a controlled chaos that marries its deathrash roots with a macabre, funerary atmosphere replete with sinister, lurching organ work. Vengeance From Darkness was self-financed and self-released as a cassette by the band, gaining a legendary status in tape trading circles at the time. The prestige of this demo led to some of its tracks being reused on a split 7” with Beherit via Turbo Music in 1991, and another 7” titled Morbid Rites on Seraphic Decay Records in 1992. The band would remain dormant until their reactivation in 2012.

Demo Rehearsal 1991 by Nebiros

Nebiros

Demo Rehearsal 1991
Nuclear War Now

***NEBIROS was formed in 1990 in Medellin, Colombia by JOVANNI GARCIA, aka SACRILEGUS. Joined by drummer BLACK SATAN and bassist / guitarist FERETRUM, Nebiros stood out among their chaotic Ultrametal peers in Colombia by playing mid-paced, occult black metal in the vein of Samael, Rotting Christ and Deathcrush-era Mayhem. Their first demo is the sole recording featuring Sacrilegus before his untimely murder in 1992, although his lyrics would be used for several more years. Black Satan was soon replaced by DOMINUS SAEVITUM, and the group would remain a duo throughout the rest of its initial run. Originally self-released by the band in 1991, NWN! Productions is proud to bring this release to a deservedly wider audience.

***SABBAT are legends of underground metal. 2024 marks their 40th year of creating pure blacking heavy metal. As they enter their fifth decade, the Japanese horde has returned with their tenth full-length album Sabbaticult. It’s a rare feat for an extreme metal band to retain such relentless integrity for so many years, and rarer still for that intensity to grow with time. Yet Sabbaticult shows that GEZOL and his fellow maniacs GINOIR (guitars) and ZORUGELION (drums) have indeed outdone themselves. This record allows no respite from its opening blast to its epic coda, with eight tracks of Japanese blacking heavy metal thrash in the tradition of Venom, early Bathory, and Sodom. But rather than sticking to a formula, Sabbat employs a deft compositional aptitude that has deep roots in traditional heavy metal, with distinct movements and a tasteful melodicism that constantly reminds the listener that they are in the presence of the genuine article. Gezol’s tortured vocals howl in a manner truly unnerving, with Ginoir’s implacable guitar work recalling Mercyful Fate. Album closer “Kanashibari” provides a stunning epilogue, standing comfortably alongside classics like “Mion’s Hill” in the group’s canon. This is an essential release for fans of extreme underground metal NWN! Productions is proud to bring the Japanese language version (sung in Japanese) of this record to the west. This release comes a few months before SABBAT tours the USA and Latin America in October of 2024.

Guerreros de Lucifer by Nebiros

Guerreros de Lucifer
Nuclear War Now

***NEBIROS was formed in 1990 in Medellin, Colombia by Jovanni Garcia, aka Sacrilegus. Joined by drummer Black Satan and bassist/guitarist Feretrum, Nebiros stood out among their chaotic Ultrametal peers in Colombia by playing mid-paced, occult black metal in the vein of Samael, Rotting Christ and Deathcrush-era Mayhem. Their first demo is the sole recording featuring Sacrilegus before his untimely murder in 1992, although his lyrics would be used for several more years. Black Satan was soon replaced by Dominus Saevitum, and the group would remain a duo throughout the rest of its initial run. Their debut full-length Guerreros de Lucifer arrived in 1996 and remains an outstanding example of 90s black metal. Each of its eight tracks is a fully realized piece, with a mournful sense of melodicism driving their overall musical vision. While homage is paid to their aforementioned influences, Nebiros’ songwriting skill and genuine conviction place them directly in conversation with their European counterparts as opposed to a mere genre exercise. The epic title track alone is worth the price of admission. With a low-fidelity recording style and a truly cult cover photo, Guerreros de Lucifer belongs in the canon of classic international 90s black metal. Originally self-released by the band in 1996, NWN! Productions is proud to bring this release to a deservedly wider audience.

Syzygial Miscreancy by Hellwitch

Hellwitch

Syzygial Miscreancy
Nuclear War Now

***HELLWITCH formed in 1984 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Something was truly in the water in Florida at the time, as its nascent scene of bands began careers that would redefine and propel extreme metal to unprecedented heights as the decade progressed. Unlike many of their much-lauded peers in the world of Florida metal, Hellwitch's approach to thrash and death metal was decidedly technical in nature, placing their music in a liminal threshold that defied any rigid genre classification. Their debut full-length Syzygial Miscreancy demonstrates the group’s mastery of brutal thrash as well as more progressively-minded and labyrinthine excursions with few parallels outside of perhaps early Atheist. Their dense compositional approach is reflected in the lyrics, with arcane song titles like “Mordrivial Dissemination” confirming that Hellwitch was on a different artistic plane than their Satanic and Lovecraftian colleagues. Their expert musicianship is not merely an exercise in virtuosity; indeed, tracks like “Nosferatu” are blunt and anthemic enough to stand aside the greats of their era while retaining a distinct quality that makes this record remarkable. Originally released by the legendary (and infamous) Wild Rags Records in 1990, NWN! Productions is proud to bring this overlooked classic back to a vinyl format.
