Sometimes you get a laid-back synth-punk jam, a swaggered backbeat rock ’n’ roll banger or, in this case, a blistering 17 song hardcore album. There’s a lot of different influences mashed together (Adrenaline OD, early MDC, Neos), some more obvious than others, but no direct ripoffs or lazy genre exercises are to be had here. People conflate ANJ as a concept album band, but this one is a little freer in its approach. Handling some of the classic lyrical tropes (alienation, conformism, consumerism, anti Gov / War…) with an audacious ease and cool dexterity kind of acts as the glue to hold this wild crash together. It's cohesive in its non-cohesiveness, “just whatever was giving me the shits on the day of writing.” Alien Nosejob started as a loner bedroom recording project with no fixed genre, mutating over time into a 6-piece band with a restless punk-adjacent core. ***On a rare evening in 2022, the city of Berlin found all 4 members of its favorite gloomy post-punk band inside the walls of the legendary Kreuzberg venue S.O.36. A historic and culturally vital institution that has housed heaps of classic performances reaching all the way back to 1978. DIÄT was in top form this evening, and we were lucky to learn the sound people were wise enough to hit record at the desk. The set was atmospheric and tense throughout but highlighted with moments of intimate playfulness that one is normally only privy to in person. The crowd was treated to a mixed bag of beloved album tracks and obscure catalog deep cuts—some of which have never been available on vinyl before now. A celebration of love, unity and noise. The idea of PHYSIQUE and ELECTRIC CHAIR doing a split record was a spontaneous idea that got thrown out when a handful of members from each band went swimming together a few summers ago. The thought that they were two very different sounding and well celebrated bands, from the same small town made it very appealing. Of course, the driving idea was that it was a symbol of friendship between members of the bands. Since their respective inceptions, the two bands have been closely intertwined. Riley lived with a few members of Electric Chair for many years. Trae is a former member of Physique—and Riley has even filled in on drums for EC. The two bands love one other and have been long time friends and supporters of each other’s music. The Vacant Lot are a first wave punk band from Canberra, started in 1978, that released just one EP in 1981. They played a few gigs and broke up shortly after but not without having a full set list of free-thinking, anti-establishment, Wire/Magazine/Buzzcocks inspired tunes to call from. And call they have! 'Creatures of the Night' is a collection of songs mostly written in '78/'79 but never recorded. Now with a fresh line-up (including Alien Nosejob's Jake Robertson!) they finally see the light.We asked singer George Howson about where the impetus comes from and he shot back with: "Writing songs is something I have to do. I wanted bring life some of our earliest songs which were never recorded, and to pair them with lyrics that did justice to their energy and power. A lot of my working life outside the band takes place in that edge territory where bush intersects with farmland, which provides much of the setting for the lyrics, inspiring the images and sensibility. My interest is in exploring internal and outer landscapes, and to try to make sense of the complex interplay between the two. ***What started out as an exciting career kick off back in 2019, with the Fat Skeleton EP on Iron Lung Records, HOMELESS CADAVER continued to write with the intention of making more records and finally playing a show but the 2020 police had alternate plans for the band. We don’t need to get into the details on that but they’re out now and picking up where they left off. Before the break they had recorded most of these four songs intended for a release on a Southern Californian label (details also withheld here, NDA blah blah blah) but the label didn’t have the patience to deal with the mess so HC was dropped and the world moved on. Well kinda, it was early 2020, so I guess you could say the world moved… in. Anyway, the band finished the songs late last year and sent them to us so here we are, offering stripped down, juvenile thug synth KBD inspired garage stains about hustling, dating and excessive pleasures. Speaking of excessive, at one point during the Champale Wishes and Cadaviar Dreams completion phase the band did up some deluxe horn and string arrangements to accompany the EP. And then laughed really really hard when they threw them directly in the trash because “that shit sucks” and “what are we Juliards?”.
