Constellation Tatsu

***Brussels-based producer, composer, and field recordist Le Motel has developed a distinct body of work rooted in environmental sound, collage, and immersive electronic composition. Across releases, collaborations, and audiovisual projects, his music blends ambient textures, rhythmic experimentation, field recordings, and downtempo electronics into transportive listeningexperiences.Le Motel is also the founder of the Brussels label Maloca Records and has become known for projects that incorporate recordings gathered through travel and collaboration. His acclaimed release Odd Numbers / Số Lẻ drew from recordings made in Vietnam and explored the intersection of ambient composition, documentary sound, and experimental electronic music. Pozo de Agua continues Le Motel’s exploration of atmosphere, texture, and place through a fluid palette of ambient electronics, organic detail, and layered sonic environments. Most of the tracks were created outdoors or in transit, primarily on trains, emerging from what Le Motel describes as “a very natural and emotional process” of translating feelings, memories, and passing thoughts into sound. The album treats environmental sounds — ripples, water drops, movement, and air — with the same importance as traditional instruments, allowing elements to drift in and out like ocean waves while forming subtle polyrhythms and overlapping textures.Working at the intersection of ambient, experimental electronic music, balearic downtempo, and new age-inspired sound design, Le Motel creates music that feels both intimate and expansive. His approach combines processed acoustic elements, environmental recordings, and soft electronic structures into compositions that reward deep listening while maintaining an understated emotional pull. For listeners drawn to exploratory ambient music, environmental...

***Setting aside the dread-soaked UK atmosphere of his Karkossyn moniker, Tavis Hitchcock introduces Grandma Love. In stark contrast to his previous work, Grandma Love welcomes listeners home for a warm, hearty stew just before the streetlights come on. Drawing from childhood nostalgia, Cornish summers, and family day trips, Hitchcock pulls the plug on a reservoir of mood and atmosphere that sits somewhere between post-club sofa lounging and early morning coffee mug steam.Following his appearance on Northfield Records' Gilbert Road EP with the track "A2," this self-titled debut album dawns the opening chapter in the Grandma Love story. Filled with field recordings, delicate percussion, washed-out pads, and fragments of home-video VHS recordings, the album opens a time capsule of lost memories, coastal daydreams, and a longing for a time washed far away with the tide.

Sachi's Mirror

Talking in a Different Way
Constellation Tatsu

***Talking in a Different Way is the debut full-length release of sachi’s mirror, the creative alias of multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Shaina Pan. Melding disparate elements of ambient, electronic, dream-pop, and avant-garde classical, Pan beckons us into sonic worlds equally enigmatic and emotive.Across a collection of self-produced songs and vignettes that began to take form during a month-long residency in Vallejo, CA in the spring of 2025, she explores a theme of constant and quiet evolution, posing the question: What are we if the world we were born into no longer exists? How do we relate to one another and ourselves? Using field recordings and looped textures as sonic blueprints, she patiently constructs dimly lit, spiraling paths that simultaneously churn inward towards memory and outward towards the cosmos.Pan studied violin performance at Indiana University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, specializing in contemporary classical music. After nearly two decades of performing in classical ensembles, Pan left the path to becoming a symphony violinist, burnt out and frustrated by a culture of rigidity. She settled in Oakland where she eventually began writing and performing in post-punk quartet Juicebumps.Emboldened by her peers in the Bay Area scene, she found herself shifting towards composition and improvisation, using her violin, voice, and laptop to explore electroacoustic composition. From those efforts emerged room to receive, her 2025 debut EP on Cone Shape Top Imprint. Talking in a Different Way arrives one year later on Constellation Tatsu, a woozy 35-minute spell sparkling with the same...

Transcoastal Night Drive

The album opens at dusk with an imagined final stop before departure, a roadside gas station just as daylight fades. This introductory scene, conceived as “Last Gas Station Before the Horizon,” places the listener amid passing cars, distant seagulls, and the low hum of anticipation. The idea is to frame the record as part of a radio program, potentially guided by a radio announcer’s voice drifting in and out of the soundscape. From there, the journey moves fully into night. Tracks progress like signals picked up along the drive, calm, reflective, and gently nostalgic, until the album’s closing moment. “Peaceful Blue” represents arrival at the final destination at dawn, when the sky shifts into a deep blue and the listener waits quietly for the sun to rise and a new day to begin.

Bifuu_ZONE—translated roughly as “a zone of gentle breeze”—is a concept developed from Tsudio Studio’s personal vocabulary rather than any strict linguistic equivalent. While liminal spaces are often associated with unease, Bifuu_ZONE reframes them as places of quiet comfort, restoration, and slow transformation. The project centers on impermanence, erosion, and the subtle ways time reshapes even the most solid structures. The West takes its title literally, drawing inspiration from buildings and environments located west of Osaka. Each track is composed with a specific architectural space in mind, allowing tone, texture, and resonance to emerge from imagined structures rather than narrative progression. The result is a site-responsive ambient work that listens closely to stillness, weathering, and spatial openness. Saxophonist mori_de_kurasu appears on three tracks, introducing breath and human fragility into the album’s restrained sonic palette.

***Swedish composer Johan Agebjörn (best known for his work with Sally Shapiro and releases on labels like Paper Bag and Spotted Peccary) returns with Southern Forest, his first solo album of new material in ten years, since 2015’s Notes. A collection of nature-themed electronic ambient music, Southern Forest is built around analog synths, sparse rhythms, and a cinematic tone. Inspired by the deep forests of Sweden, the album feels grounded yet expansive, earthy, melodic, and emotionally immersive. The album features collaborations with ambient legend Dr. Atmo (known for the classic Silence series with Pete Namlook), Cate Brooks (The Advisory Circle), synthwave queen NINA, and fellow Swedes Miranda Magdalena and Mikael Ögren, each adding unique tonal shades and emotional depth to the record’s layered narrative. The result is a highly textured work that blends ambient, downtempo, and gentle electro into something transportive and cohesive. Agebjörn's signature melodic sensibility is present, but here it’s more restrained, letting tone and space do the storytelling. Fans of his earlier ambient work (Mossebo, The Mountain Lake) will feel at home, while new listeners will discover a refined voice in contemporary ambient.RIYL: Steve Roach, Tangerine Dream, Suzanne Ciani, Gigi Masin, Huerco S.

***Destruction represents a new phase in Reuben Sawyer's musical journey, blending straightforward vocals with ambient textures for the first time. The album explores themes of destruction and rebirth, focusing on the tension between man-made structures and the natural world. It begins with a reflection on nature’s permanence, contrasting with humanity’s pursuit of novelty. As the album unfolds, Sawyer delves into the annihilation of humanity and the cyclical nature of existence. Inspired by Bill Fay’s Who Is the Sender?, the final track addresses transcendental questions surrounding the end times, introducing the concept of a "driver" rather than a "sender" from a non-Christian, mystical perspective. Sawyer’s previous efforts have tended toward exploring the darker sides of humanity, and here continues this inner excavation.

***Julius Smack engages in a dialogue with a fictional AI assistant to create an album using the prompt, “Make an album that tells the story about the origins of Julius Smack.” Starlight emerges as the imagined response, envisioning a world where beauty and violence intertwine, and memories and dreams are excavated to craft stories. In a near-future Earth, where artists are among the planet’s last inhabitants, a symbiotic relationship has formed between humans and AI—each relying on the other for nourishment and healing. At the sight of a shooting star, artists mine their memories and dreams with generative AI to produce art, which sustains them but generates toxins that must be expelled upon the next shooting star by creating more art. To compose Starlight, Julius Smack drew inspiration from all facets of life, with the album’s “dataset” serving as a kind of diary. It weaves together old demos, bookmarked TikTok clips of AI-generated content (such as a deepfake of Biden and Trump singing in Mandarin alongside Kamala Harris’ laughter), 2000s dance music, and ‘90s cyberpunk anime, including Ghost in the Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Everyday experiences also became part of the dataset: learning Yaqui in online classes with fellow diasporic Yaquis, riding the train, walking the dog, and dreaming. These disparate threads coalesce to question AI’s role in creative and labor economies, forming a counterfactual narrative where everything—and nothing—is art. In 2025, Julius Smack will perform iterations of Starlight across the US, Europe, and Asia. Blending dance, music, theater,...

Decomposition: Fox on a Highway by Saapato

Saapato

Decomposition: Fox on a Highway
Constellation Tatsu

***While working a job that required frequent drives between Philadelphia and a remote warehouse to sort furniture, Brendan Principato, the artist behind the project Saapato, noticed a fox on the side of the highway that had been struck dead by a car. Its vibrant red coat stood out against the asphalt. Day after day, the fox remained there, gradually transitioning from serene lifelessness to an unrecognizable state, a haunting reminder of nature’s cyclical processes. This encounter sparked a year-long exploration of decomposition—not merely as a biological process but as a metaphor for transformation, interconnectedness, and renewal. The result is Saapato’s forthcoming album, a deeply conceptual project inspired by the five stages of decomposition: fresh, bloat, active decay, advanced decay, and dry/remains. In researching decomposition, Principato learned about the intricate network of factors that drive it: animals, bacteria, fungi, temperature, moisture, and time. Recognizing the inherently interwoven nature of these forces, he chose to mirror this interplay in the music. What began as a series of foundational “skeleton tracks” that Principato produced quickly evolved into a collective endeavor, with a wide array of guest musicians and sound artists contributing additional processing and instrumental textures to Principato's source material. These collaborators act as symbolic “decomposers,” breaking down and reshaping the sonic landscape to create an altered final form of the music found across the album. The album features contributions from an extraordinary roster of artists, including Laraaji, Shuta Yasukochi, Loris S. Sarid, James Bernard & marine eyes, KMRU, Diatom Deli, Haruhisa Tanaka, Ki...

***Portlander Paul Dickow, as Strategy, presents his latest album— A Cooler World. Fascinated by the unfamiliar limitations and inherent playability of a hand-me-down, 1989 model sampling keyboard, he played these pieces by hand, mostly abandoning the sequencer driven framework of sampling based music; he plays the sampler here the way a guitarist approaches the guitar. A Cooler World is a deep dive into glacial, pensive soundscapes that navigate the boundaries between experimental, ambient, and dance music. The pieces unfold with deliberate intention, expressed in a sound vocabulary that originates in the futurism of ambient techno, yet they open to the serendipitous outcomes of his instrumental experimentation. One of his few albums that fully commits to ambience, with this new album, everything is slowed down, gesturing towards stillness, and transformed into something otherworldly under a blanket of snow. ***Signal is the new album by renowned electronic music artist Brendon Moeller. Known for his innovative fusion of ambient sounds, Moeller once again pushes the boundaries of the genre with swirling, organic forms and immersive textures grounded in the dark, moody tones of deep techno and dub. What results are the sounds of melodic, fluttering synths set to low, steady beats, all of which seem to playfully dance through some kind of cosmic aural nebula. Brendon grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, he learned piano and drums, finding particular inspiration in the music of artists such as Fela Kuti, My Bloody Valentine, De La Soul and Kraftwerk. However, it was not until 1993, when Brendon moved to New York City, that his own individual style began to develop. With NYC as his base, he has worked with several prominent labels and collaborated with artists like Mikey Dread, Speedy J, Mutabaruka and MATRiXXMAN. With dozens of EPs, singles and albums to his name, Brendon’s love for experimenting with sound has created an endless source of inspiration to continuously self-reflect and advance his music. Brendon is consistently striving to reinvent himself and skillfully influence the dub scene in the process.
