Featuring pummeling drums, horns, grand pianos, haunted saloons, and all the spring reverb they could find at El Studio in SF over the course of a year.Hangtown was founded in San Francisco in 2016 from a solo album by multi-instrumentalist Robb Grimes. The music envisions a dust blown post-apocalyptic world, and the sad and twisted stories from the inhabitants therein. Grimes, joined by long term collaborators Nick Poulos (guitar), Matt Fogel (drums), and Reese Douglas (bass), released their first full length album as collaborators in 2022, titled Tales From The Gun, after years of gigging the west coast and refining their sound.Strange Riders is a Terminator 2-level sequel to their debut. With the addition of metal bassist Sandeep Bhuta, Max Daniel on Trumpet, and Herman Sandu on grand piano and Wurlitzer, and with production by Phil Becker at El Studio in SF, the album has a bigger sound and takes a more cinematic turn. One of the strangest and best albums from the Bay Area that no one asked for. And a product of a very specific musical vision- Strange Riders is an unexpected blend of cinematic western/horror surf, Morricone worship, and doomy alt-country ballads.
